1. I don't have symptoms of COVID-19, should I wear a mask ?
2. Can I use substitutes of medical masks to protect myself from infection?
3. Which masks can offer protection?

1. Should I wear a mask if I don't have symptoms of COVID-19?

Yes, you should. There are many sources claiming that you should only wear a mask if you are feeling unwell with COVID-19 symptoms (especially coughing) or looking after someone who is suspected to have contracted the disease. However, the virus can still be transmitted during the incubation period. So people who fail to show noticeable symptoms can still pass the coronavirus on.

2. Can I wear medical masks substitutes to protect myself from infection?

No. Masks made from medical-grade paper, decorative paper masks, sleek polyurethane Pitta masks, washable fabric masks and reusable dust and allergy masks etc. provide absolutely no protection against the novel coronavirus or other viruses.

3. Which masks can offer protection?

Here are some useful information for your reference while choosing the suitable mask:

a. BFE/PFE/VFE

The most common BFE, PFE, and VFE standards shown on the mask packaging are the results of the filtration rate test used to mark particles of different sizes and these standards apply to most certified masks; To effectively prevent coronavirus, you must choose the mask that has passed the PFE test. It is not recommended to buy a mask that only listed BFE standard, since there is a chance that it cannot block the virus from the droplet infection. To conclude, you have to choose the one that has BFE + PFE standard to be protected against coronavirus. The masks that passed all 3 tests will certainly be the most recommended.

b. N95 or KN95

Surgical face masks and N95 respirators filter viruses from the air with up to 95% efficiency; even though viruses are smaller than the filter spaces, they become trapped in the mask layers and by ionically binding to the filter material.

However, even the best face masks are often worn and disposed of incorrectly.  Many of the masks on the market are also counterfeits. Therefore, please only buy masks through trusted retail channels.

It is important to wear the mask snugly that covers your nose and your chin. A mask that is worn loosely will not give adequate protection.

4. Which side of the mask should face outside ?
5

4. Which side of the mask should face outward?

The colored side. As for masks that both of the sides are white, try to find markings such as the brand name, which would usually be the side facing outward.

If there no markings can be found, the side with the folds facing downwards should face outwards with the metallic nose strip facing upwards.

5. What is the difference between N95 and KN95?

Both N95 and KN95 respirators have comparable filtration efficiency, meaning that KN95 is as effective as the N95 respirator mask. The main difference between these respirators is that they are tested by different nations.

The full name for N95 mask is NIOSH-certified N95 respirator, which means these respirators are tested of 95% filtration and certified by the U.S. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The KN95 respirator is a particulate-filtering mask tested against the criteria of China.
